from the desk of MARY GILLESPIE
Perfect Face measurement, the face is divided into thirds.
  1. 1/3 from the hairline to the top of the nose (bridge)
  2. 1/3 from the top of the nose (bridge) to under the nose (where the center nasal bone or outside nostrils sit on the face)
  3. 1/3 from under the nose, where the center nasal bone or outside nostrils sit on the face, to the end of the chin
Perfect Lip measurement using the area in #3 from the above table as a guide.
  • Upper lip should be one-third of the area from the above #3, measuring from under the nose to below the upper lip, should equal 1/3 of the area from under the nose to the end of the chin
  • Lower lip and chin should constitute the remaining two-thirds
  • Easy way: take a ruler or two fingers on one hand and measure from under your nose to the bottom of your upper lip. You should be able to double this measurement by measuring from the top of your lower lip to the bottom of your chin.
  • Proportions of both lips should be the same
  • Corners of the mouth align with the iris of each eye
  • Bows on upper lip align directly under each nostril
  • Protrusion of the upper lip is slightly more than the lower lip.
Lipliners can correct some flaws others are left to the new augmentation fillers going through the FDA. Ask your doctor in the New Year if these are available to correct stubborn problems.

New Player on the laser field, forming a new popular category. Ablative means to remove. An ablative rejuvenation laser is one that removes the upper layer of the skin. CO2 and YAG are commonly used to tighten and remove wrinkles, incurring a two-to-three week downtime for the skin to heal. The patient often stays indoors for two weeks and has residual redness up to three months. Nonablative lasers are beginning to hit the market for the busy or working patient who want to erase time. A broad spectrum, intense pulse light and a radiofrequency device are showing promise with patients, understanding that wrinkles will not be completely eradicated. A series of treatments are preformed, allowing a few months to see full benefits often combined with collagen, fillers and Botox to improve over all results. The theory is the laser is causing damage or heat in the collagen layer, stimulating new growth. The upside is that leaving the doctor's office, you appear the same, without topical damage to the skin. The downside is that a series of treatments will yield the best results, so you need to return, and results are individual. Every year new technology offers broader manageable choices with non-invasive techniques.

Research on the appearance of aging cheeks has identified three key factors
  • Underlying fat pads that slide down toward the jaw line
  • Laxity of the underlying ligament system responsible for supporting cheek fat
  • Solar elastosis (elastin broken down by sun damage) of skin
